2021 Dorothy Hoard Stewardship Award recipient Myron Gonzales of Bandelier National Monument holds a painting by Pablita Velarde presented to him by the Friends of Bandelier as a token of their appreciation. His job at Bandelier is preservationist of the Ancestral Pueblo buildings and Civilian Conservational Corps National Hi stanley kubek storic District. He not only loves and cares for the land and buildings, but he puts his heart into his preservation activities.聽 He sees the value and intricacy of a window built in the 1930s and wants to restore it to the beauty it once had. He grieves the irresp stanley tumblers onsible graffiti left by unthinking visitors. He has two projects in mind to use the $1000 of the Dorothy Hoard Stewardship Award.聽 One is an anti-graffiti video to help the public understand how graffiti hurts these cultural sites. Secondly, He has a passion to teach the youth and would like to help the youth, through art, understand their creative abilities. As a token of their appreciation, The Friends of Bandelier presented Gonz stanley cup usa ales with a painting by Pablita Velarde. Velarde was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1918 and became one of the most accomplished Native American painters of her generation. Student of the Semester is a way for teachers and staff to recognize students who not only excel academically, but also show honorable integrity and character. Students are nominated by their grade level teams. The team leaders looked for students who stand out because of their academic performance, citizenship, and overall behavior in the classroom. The chosen students were invited to the Student of the Semester ceremony where they shook hands with school staff members and were congratulated on their nomination. This year, a perfect attendance award wa kubki stanley s also given out by the administra stanley butelka tion. As coordinator for the Student of the Semester, Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher Jill Gross received positive feedback from families and guest involved with the event. They greatly appreciated the opportunity to attend and participate in the experience. It was really great to see all the families come out and honor the students,  Gross said.  Theres so much more than academics in this town. By REGINA DOORNWhite RockWhen I heard there was going to be a new housing project in White Rock, I was pretty excited about it. Perhaps some affordable housing might bring more people to town and more local businesses for WR, too! Its on a strip of Hwy 4, which I drive by every single day: on my way to the local grocery and hardware store, li stanley quencher brary and post office, senior cente stanley cup r, or when I need to visit Los Alamos or Santa Fe.However, I have noticed a few things during the development of Mirador and Im not happy about it anymore.First came the big bulldozers, which wiped out nearly every single native tree, shrub and blade of grass on about 60 acres. This was done quickly and efficiently before too many people noticed. Then all activity ceased for awhile when BBB was reached  Big Bad Basalt . Next came another treat: explosions blasting through the rock, day after day after day. Large earth movers came and completely changed the look and topography of the land.Then, I got the facts. This housing project is not going to be affordable at all! A serious bummer, in my opinion. I started to get really mad whenever I drove on Longview Drive and viewed empty, dilapidated and blighted buildings and thought to myself  there is something seriously wrong with this picture . Why are we developing undeveloped land instead of improving already developed land   No pun intended here鈥?its not funny at all.
